Scollad enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war in the Scottish Horse. He was given the rank of Seargent-Major and subsequently promoted to be Regimental Seargent-Major. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 12 Mar 1915 and served with the Scottish Horse in the Dardanelles and Egypt. In Nov 1916 he was transferred to the 7th Royal Irish Rifles and gazetted Captain. Shortly after proceeding to France he was awarded the Military Cross for a raid on German trenches.  He was reported missing and then killed in action on 12 Jun 1917
